St Petersburg State University (SPSU) is the oldest university in Russia and is home to the highly-regarded Russian Language and Culture Institute. The institute has been providing Russian language instruction for over 60 years; its excellent professors have extensive experience of teaching Russian to foreigners.

SPSU specialises in long-term programmes like General Russian (one or two semesters).

Study programme:

  • Lessons cover grammar, phonetics, vocabulary, conversation, listening, reading and writing.
  • Special emphasis is placed on developing conversation and writing skills so that you can build confidence in communicating in Russian.
  • Depending on your entrance test results you will be placed in a group of your language level.
  • You will have 20 academic hours per week with a 4-hour test every 4 weeks. 1 academic hour = 45 minutes.
  • There are approximately 15 students per class.
  • Minimum duration: 4 weeks.

Derzhavin Institute offers Russian language programmes to those of all levels of Russian, from complete beginners to advance. The school is located in central St Petersburg which allows students to learn Russian whilst being surrounded by the rich culture that the city offers.

The Herzen State Pedagogical University of Russia in St Petersburg is a great choice for students who want to take a long-term Russian language course and live in the heart of the city.

  • Founded in 1797, it is one of the oldest and largest universities of Russia.
  • Right in the historic centre of St. Petersburg (just 5 minutes walk to Nevsky prospekt).
  • Amongst the notable alumni are famous writers, composers, actors, poets, sportsmen and political figures including N. Zabolotsky (writer and poet), L. Reznikov (composer and singer) and L. Egorova (actress).
  • Over 2,000 foreign students study in Herzen University annually.
  • The University has a specialized Faculty of Russian as a Foreign Language and The Russian House that offers long-term and short-term Russian courses.

Study programme:

  • The Faculty of Russian as a Foreign Language is located in the very heart of St. Petersburg (a short walk to Kazan Cathedral on Nevsky prospect).
  • Groups of 6-15 students (depending on your level of Russian).
  • You will take an entry test upon arrival (except for complete beginners).
  • On your General Russian lessons you will cover Grammar, Phonetics, Vocabulary, Conversation, Listening, Reading and Writing.
  • If your level is B1/B2 or higher you can take General Russian course (20 lessons per week) + lectures with Russian students in various academic areas. Extra classes are available during academic year only and must be discussed before the programme starts.
  • Flexible start dates and programme duration (set days for beginners).
  • Upon completion of the course, you will get the Certificate (dates of your course, your marks, number of lessons taken).
