It’s time to bring to life your Russian language skills and impress your Russian friends by dropping a few idioms into your speech! The best way of doing this is to simply learn them off by heart since many of their literal translations don’t make a lot of sense.

“Вертиться на языке" which literally means to spin on your tongue but is better translated as "to be on the tip of your tongue." Это слово у меня на языке вертится. - The word's on the tip of my tongue.
"Взять себя в руки" which means "to take yourself in hand" or "to pull yourself together." Мальчик перестал плакать по поводу результата зачета и взял себя в руки. - The boy stopped crying about his test result and pulled himself together.
"Козел отпущения" - "scapegoat." А виноватым оказался младщий брат, постоянный козел отпущения! - It ended up being my little brother's fault, he's always the scapegoat!
"Не всё то золото, что блестит” meaning "all that glitters is not gold.” Этот человек понял, что не всё то золото, что блестит, когда он вложил свои деньги в фондовый рынок и потерял большую часть. - The man learned all that glitters is not gold when he invested his money in the stock market and lost most of it
"Подлить масла в огонь" meaning "to add fuel to the fire/to make things worse." Мне кажется, это плохая идея - это лишь подольет масла в огонь. - I think it's bad idea; it will just add fuel to the fire.
"Сидеть как на иголках" which literally means to sit on needles but is better translated as "to be in a stew." Моя дочка ещё не вернулась- я сижу как на иголках! - I am in a stew, my daughter is not back home yet!”
"Ставить в тупик" meaning "to arrive at a dead end" or "to baffle." Твои дествия вчера поставили меня в тупик. - Your actions yesterday baffled me.
“Устроить пир на весь мир” which literally means to put on a feast for the whole world but is better translated as “to push the boat out.” Раз у нас юбилей, давай устроим пир на весь мир! - As it is our anniversary, let's push the boat out!
